SPILOTES SUBSPECIES

Jonasgn Nov 15, 2004 05:34 PM

Hello i`m thinking of getting a pair of Spilotes, but i`m confused about the subspecies. Where i work we have two pairs of speckled spilotes, but we can`t find out what subspecies they are.
Their basic colour are black and then they have yellow spots on the first half of their body, fading more and more into black towards the tail. About half way down their body, they are all black.
So my questions are:

What is the scientific name of this subspecies?

And where do they origenate from?

I really hope you can help me, cause if i can breed them i will get a pair for free.

PS. Any info on the other subspecies will be very welcome too.

Thanks a lot
Jonas

Spilotes pullatus you mean?

I don't know about subspecies, but there are apparently quite a few different localities (I was actually just given this info recently on here).

They are native to Mexico and South America, and I've heard their range is huge, going all the way to the southern tip of Argentina.

However, I believe I remember hearing that those that are highly speckled, compared to banded, are NOT from Mexico, but don't quote me on that.

You can get a pair for free if you'll breed them? I'd jump on that deal, if I were you.
