White faced hardboard for sides of racks?

C. Elmer Nov 15, 2004 06:03 PM

Hi,

I'm planning on building a few more racks coming up, and as usual would like to trysomething different this time. I still plan on using 3/4" melamine like I've always worked with, but rather then having the sides and back be solid melamine, which would be very heavy, or supported by a number of 1x4's or 1x6's, which doesn't look as nice, I was going to get the 1/4" white faced hardboard from home depot and use this for the sides/back. The outside would plastic faced white, so it'd look very nice (the inside would be the plain brown hardboard, but that doesn't matter to me). It's going to be two sections, approx. 4' tall each of the sterlite 41 quart tubs. I haven't yet decides if the rack will be lengthwise or widthwise. If this works well, I'll use the same design for my baby racks next year. Thanks,

-Christian-

Hi,

The product you mention is probably too flimsy for the side of a rack.

One thing I've done is use 1/2" plywood to save weight. Of course that adds $$ which may not be worth it.

BTW, having the boxes slide in width-wise saves weight. To save even more weight go with a back-less design. Then have some simple cleats to stop the boxes and cover the back with foil-faced, styrene insulation board.
