Having to force feed a hognose and some health questions

electricbluescat Nov 15, 2004 08:34 PM

I have had to force feed my male hognose twice now. Its been a little over month sice he has eaten and he wouldnt have eaten if I had not force fed him a fuzzie head. The first time I did it I did not notice or see alot of mucous well the second time I did notice it and it had bubbles in it. has anyone ever force fed a western hog on here and if so do they salivate alot when you force feed them?

thanks,
jc

Have you tried other feeding methods; scenting, braining, tuna juice, lizard scent. Ive only force fed a hog once and it died shortly after. I was told after that I shouldnt have done it. A month isnt all that long if its not losing weight. Good luck with her.

One month is way to soon to force feed a hog. They often go off feed, especially this time of year, for as much as a few months. You can try scenting mice using the techniques repzoo44 mentioned, or just wait it out. Two of my four males are currently off feed, and I got one to eat only after split braining. I'm wanting to get a couple more meals in them before they brumate. It can be frustrating.

Good luck with the little guy,
Jim
