Baby Rattler

Mark Banczak Nov 15, 2004 09:00 PM

I found this baby Blacktailed Rattler Sat. The temp was only 57 and there was a hard overcast. Just the same, this little guy was out crawling around. After I pulled the camera back he continued on to a nearby hole.

I grew up in S California and did a lot of hiking in the Canyons of the San Gabriel Mountains. I used to find baby Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes out and about though November. It was often too cold for them to move well. This led me to theorise that some instinctive behaviors were at least partialy learned. Perhaps being so small bodied they cool off faster and get "stuck" in the open when larger bodied snakes have more time too seek cover. I found it interesting though. Incidently, the best looking Rattlesnake I have ever seem was a Black-Tailed in the Hualapai Mountains outside of Kingman Az.
