My experience with housing geckos together

waldo Nov 15, 2004 10:45 PM

A few weeks ago I fixed up a very nice 30 gallon long tank with multipile hides, humid huts and food dishes. The leos didn't fight at all but they where so stressed by being close together that they wouldn't come out of their hides or eat. They also scratched each other up pretty bad just by walking across each other, now my SHCT has scars on her tail. They did eat when I gave them crix and the same SHCT got bit right in the back when the other female went after a crix,I expect a scar to form there too.Just thought I would share my experience with everyone, there are dangers in housing leos together even if its not from fighting.I went ahead and seperated the girls and now they seem alot happier and are eating better.I'm not saying don't house your leos together, just be careful.

Sounds like a classic case of one female being dominant in the group. I like to think the gecko has "Everything is mine" syndrome. =)

Wow, didnt I get bashed for saying it is not a good idea to house leos together even if they are females???? Thanks for posting that info Waldo..... There may be hope for these inexperianced people here that think because they read a few books they are experts.....

I didn't want to get into a dragged out discussion about why my girls didn't get along.I,like many others decided to ingnore the advice that I was given about housing leos together and did it anyways, with bad results.I know many ppl keep their females together without any problems,I just wanted to show the other side of things.

How long had these geckos been housed together? Generally if you have them together from an early age and they are comparable in size there isn't much issue with fighting. Also it is vital to ensure plenty of food so you eliminate the possibility of competition over food issues. I have housed females together in breeding groups for years (about 10 for those of you counting) and haven't had problems. Except for the one female that bit her own tail because it was wriggling around during her feeding frenzy!

I have also, on occassion, had to rearrange some breeding groups do to acquisition of a male and haven't had the aggression that some people have experienced between their females.

These females (15) have plenty of space and have been housed in this cage for about a year now.
