There is virtually nobody here in the United states breeding Emerald Tree Monitors. The ones that you speak of for sale at the moment are not US captive bred, they are hatched out in indonesia, where the eggs were basically just collected, hatched, and then shipped out here. I do see a significant difference between that and captive bred. Anyways, the reason for so few breedings can be attributed to several factors.

Breeding tree monitors is very difficult to begin with, as when most imported specimens come in, they are in very rough shape, and require many months to years, to be completely healthy, and willing to breed.

Many people jump into "breeding tree monitors", thinking that it will be an overnight ordeal. When they find out that this could take quite a bit of time, they get frustrated, and sell their animals, or trade for something they will be able to make money off quicker..

The other main reason why you do not see cb babies here, is that a lot of people have a tendency of killing their females off. There is already a significantly higher percentage of males imported, combined with the high mortality rate of females, gives the lack of cb babies. Females are much more frail than males, and can take a quick turn for the worst if you turn your back on them for a minute.

Honestly, I believe that tree monitors are among the most difficult monitors to keep(wc individuals that is), and just make sure you understand what you are getting into if you should decide to keep members of this complex. I do not know of your experience with monitors, but they certainly do not make good or even suitable first time monitors....

I hope this helps a bit, and answers some of your questions...

Take care, have a great day,

bob
