in your boa cages for mite control? Do you use it while snake is in the cage or do you remove snake for 24-36 hrs while strip is hung? How effective is it? Any bad side effects noticed? Any info at all is appreciated.
Thanks,

Alot of people have their own ideas on what is the best way and safest way to get rid of mites. The ultimate best way is through quarantine and seperateing new animals from your general population. Of course, if the new animal has mites when you get it, than what is the best way to get rid of them? I have not had any mite problems in many years, but in the early days of being a novice keeper, I had plenty of problems. The best way I found to get rid of them permanently is to use; " No Pest Strips " that you can buy at the hardware store. The problem, is that alot of the ones at the hardware store are stale and have lost alot of their potentcy. If they are not strong smelling and do not have a little bit of a green tinge to them, they are probably getting stale and will not work that great. If that is the case, you can call the manufacturer and 9 out of 10 times, they will send you some fresh ones at no cost to you at all. There is alot of fear with some keepers, when it comes to useing these Strips. I personnaly, have seen no harm in it and have seen no adverse signs in the animals when used in the past. Here is the regimen that I use and when done this way, it will completely get rid of them for good; " Put the animal in the bath to get rid of the initial adult mites that are on it; then put the animal in the terrarium with the Pest Strip and no water bowl for 36 hours; then take the Strip out and seal it up and go back to normal husbandry. After that, on the 9th day put the strip back in for 48 hours and take it out for 3 more days and then back in for 24hrs and then you are done. " Alot of breeders live and die on mite sprays and certain types of bedding that is supposed to rid mites and talk Pest Strips down. Use at your own descretion, but it works and it is permanent and I have never seen any ill effects........GOD BLESS.....Johnson Herp

You can use pest Strips 24/7/365 without any harmful side effects.
They have been used for years,no negitives such as breeding/birth/growth issues have been reported. Then again the old timers dont chime in much when it comes to successful "anything" LOL!!
1"X 1" pieces put in perferated plastic film cans placed on each end of a cage will effectively release enough to keep the mites on the chill for 30 days. Just replace with fresh pieces every 30 days.
Keep the rest of the unused strip in a zip-lock bag till needed. One Pest Strip should last well into a year, then again the need for continued used poses questionable husbandary practices IMO.

I have used these in the past with good results. You did not specify what size cage. So here goes. For a 10 gal a 1"x 1" piece is enough. a 20 a 1"x2" piece. A 30 gal a 2"x 2". A 55 gal go 3"x3". cover half the top of these. Yes you can leave the snake in. After 2 days wash everything up. repeat in one week. Ok so for the piece of strip, punch holes in a baggie with a fork and place the strip in it, seal it up. Throw that in the cage and forget it for a couple days.
Just like someother posts....this is at your own risk. Some people do not approve of this but I have found that it works. I might add that I have not had mites in 4 yers..knock on wood...but this is just one method that will work. I will add that you DO NOT want to do this as a "precaution" long term effects could be hazardous to your Boas health. Just my tip on strips.

don't over do it. The method of putting a 1x1 square in a perferated film container works well. I usually use one large block for a 12 x 12 room as a preventitive but haven't put one in a cage for several years. Just make sure to adjust the size used proportunately to cage size. If its too big it will kill the snake as well as the bugs.
Good luck-

PS- I use Ivermectin spray for the mites on the body and Provent-a-mite for the cage. Repeated in 14 days. Mites never return after this treatment.

we just had this disscusion on another forum and pest strips have been proven to cause basal cell cancer. Aside from that there are several products on the market that are proven safe for reptiles why not just buy one of those im sure you could find a bunch in the classifieds here. I use provent o mite have for years, never a prob when you follow the label. back in the 80's I used pest strips and some other stuff but back then there was no provent o mite or for that matter any safe treatment meant for reptiles. All we had were home remedies then, we have safe alternatives now so why put your animals at risk?
