Holdback Leg attacked - vets out of town

dmlove Nov 16, 2004 02:04 PM

Well, I was gone on a retreat yesterday, and when i came home today, one of my smaller holdbacks (housed with one the same size) had his frint right leg attacked. It had to have happened earlier today as the blood was fresher. The poor guy was holdin his own, but my vet is out of town for a meeting (and he is 1 hour away!) I cleaned it right away with hydrogen peroxide, and then put some nolvason ointment on it, and of course he is in quarantine. What else is there to do to prevent infection and help the wounds heal before i get him to the vet? He will be back this friday i beleive, thats what the secretary said.

Thanks all

Sounds like you've got it covered David. Just keep it clean. How did that thing with Anna ever work out?

The vet sent her home and said there is nothing else she can do...because she does not feel that she will survive surgury. She gained control of her back legs (as in no convulsions) and im giving her 1 cc of NeoCalglucon everyday and I can tell she is hungry, and she does eat a few supers/crix and a bite of salad everyday. But she still is just laying there, not WANTING to move. This afternoon i got her out and she looked extremely bloated, and when i brought her down to the ground, with my left hand on her abdomen and right hand supporting head area, and when i was close to the floor she passed gas and started defacating. I beleive that the eggs are there obstructing everything and only letting the intestines be open a small amount, and when there is pressure it forces stool out. I dunno what to do. I dig a hole in her laying box for her, and she just sits there. She does get up and bask (a good climb) but from going up the branch and down is about the extent of her activity. Im at a loss.

Sorry to hear that Anna's sick. It sucks having sick animals.

I hope she lays her eggs. Have you tried soaking her? Even though I know soaking works to help move obstructions (mostly when they are constipated or have calcium build up).

Are you sure they are eggs and not a build of of feces or calcium?

Once again, I hope she gets better.

Hey = thanks for your concern. The vet is almost positive (i know i always makes me wonder... :/ ) that it is dystocia (egg binding) because all the signs match, they THOUGH they could see some eggs buy wernt sure. She is passing fecal matter fine, in normal clumps (as normal as they can be with her not eating for a while) but i will definetly ask the vet when she gets back about it.

Again, thanks for your concern.
