Venomous Snake Training

flaviomorrissiey Nov 16, 2004 02:55 PM

Anyone out there applying behavioral conditioning to venomous snakes as their safety protocol. For expample; shifting into a box, going from point a to b, climb a tree, come to you, holding, desensitized to biting, etc. I just started a new website about reptile and amphibian training. I already have some of this on video, which I will post. Has anyone else done this stuff. I am jsut looking for some one to share there findings.

Thanks, I have worked with her and have done demonstrations target training with her snakes. I did a live demo at the Orlando Reptile Show in October. The snake did great for the first time.

Actually, I think she was told not to return. She posts elsewhere now.

Although I have heard of shift boxes and such, i dont know who to contact about specific information. i actually had a question about ur training website. although this doesnt belong on the venomous, thought i would ask you since you were here. Doesnt the intense food response of reptiles inhibit the ability to associate a stimulus and response?

Because of the intense food response in reptiles, it makes training (using stimulus/response) less difficult. Food would be the primary reinforcement. By using target training, shift training, bridges etc. The venomous snakes can be controlled in a manner that makes handling a little safer. I am gathering videos to post on the web site to show as examples. I have seen training with no contact and protective contact.

I disagree with you on this subject being on this forum. This is now being implemented into safety protocols in many zoos and private collections when handling venomous snakes. I believe that if many people catch onto just using some basic techniques there won't be as many accidents. I am looking for case studies to use for examples and the diversity of techniques being used.

Thanks for the input,
