Need Crested Gecko Advice

pdm Nov 16, 2004 04:06 PM

Would those that have hands on experience with the crested gecko say that they are a nervous lizard & handling stresses then out & they really dont like interaction with humans or would you say they can be tamed down & come to not be scared of people.

Of course handling stresses them, as it does any reptile to a greater or lesser degree. I would rate them somewhere in the mid range as far as becoming accustomed to being handled, not as laid back as an AFT, but not as hyper as a Tokay. Over time they can get used to being handled, but I haven't seen any that I would say actually enjoy it.

If you're unsure about handling your Crested, don't. Stressing them needlessly is never good for the animal, and don't forget that if he drops his tail it's not gonna grow back. Better safe than sorry.

from the moment that our cresties are hatched, (within a day or two after they shed) we hand feed them daily. We get them out, put them on our hand and put babyfood from a spoon to their mouths. We handle them minimally but consistently and they seem to be quite handleable. We have not had one drop a tail and we have quite a few.
My point is, they seem to be fine with some handling and we sit on the floor when we handle so that if they do jump, they do not fall and hurt themselves.

i have three now and two of them seem to not like being handled very much they jump all around the cage when i try to grab them, but my other one as soon as i walk by his cage and he is not sleeping he will jump up onto the screen and when i open it he will jump rite into my hands. he seems to love coming out always looking around exploring my bedroom, so i guess it just depends on the gecko. its the same thing with my leos three of them like coming out and my one wants nothing to do with me
