Egg care question(s)...

kidcrazee82 Nov 16, 2004 05:01 PM

My female should be laying eggs in about 1-2 weeks and I want to make sure I got it right... The substrate in her cage is paper towels, so i have a nest box make out of a rubber-maid tupper ware bowl, it's about 2.5 inches tall, and round. It is filled with damp(not soaked) bed-a-beast, the kind that comes compressed and you just add water. The container is air tight when the top is on and I was planning on leaving the container sealed in the cage with my cresteds. the temp in there is always between 72-78 degrees. Is this good or should I make changes?

i'm a little unclear on this part.
"The container is air tight when the top is on and I was planning on leaving the container sealed in the cage with my cresteds"

are you going to leave the top completely off?
what i do is have say a round tupperware container and then cut a section about 2-3 diameter out of the top, then lay a piece of vine over or very near the opening. i also move the females to a smaller cage when i know they're going to lay, this way i know crickets won't find the eggs and i have a better chance of the female laying in the lay box.

i started removing them from the main cage when i found 4 eggs eaten by crickets when i was cleaning the cage out. same thing happened with some of my mossy leaftail eggs. that was definately enough to tick me off to spend the little bit of extra time to do this.

When she lays her eggs, the nest box will have an airtight lid for incubation, and what I meant by leaving it in the cage...When the eggs are layed, I am going to keep the container in the cage with the crested because as far as I know it will be the correct temp. I will open the container 2-3 times a week for circulation and to add moisture if needed.
