While cleaning cage I found eggs......

Chameleon996 Nov 16, 2004 05:21 PM

I have two wild caught brown anoles. I have had them since august. I was unable to tell if they are a pair, but since I have eggs I am assuming they are. The eggs were colapsed because I had no idea they even layed them. I found them on the bottom of the cage when I was changing the substrate. There were six total. I soaked them in some water to soften them up and it doesn't look like they hatched.

My question is this if they are mating how often could they lay eggs so that I can start to check? If they are not mating could it be possible that they were caught gravid? Thats almost four months of being gravid. I thought anoles only layed two or three at a time?

there is a great caresheet here on kingsnake about anoles. i haven't looked at it in a while but it may say something on it about mating.
my friend has a pair of bahama anoles that keep mating and laying eggs since she bought them from petsmart. i have 2 of the babies, both females i think. her female has a white strip down her back with a cool diamond pattern and the male is mostly brown, bigger and his dewlap is much bigger when he flares it from his throat.
i think they lay eggs like 30-60 days from mating. then the eggs hatch in like 60-90 days. THAT IS A GUESS. i'd have to ask her.
she has her anoles housed in a hugh enclosure. it's like 6 feet tall by 4 feet wide. her husband built it. she just lets them mate and the female lays the eggs in the soil of the plants and in a few weeks karen sees a baby.
if your not willing to care for lots (the last count on a new baby is 15)then i'd seperate yours. otherwise prepare to care for very tiny creatures that eat fruit flies an pinheads.

I only have green anoles and am only assuming they are similar to browns in this fashion:

My female anole Leeloo was kept alone for over a year and she laid dud eggs all the time. Now both females are together and there's even more. So you may have a male and a female, or, like mine, you have two females and they're just laying unfertilized eggs.
