Skin blisters, Mud snakes.

Mike Stefani Nov 17, 2004 07:22 AM

Hello
I have several hatchling Mud Snakes, all feeding and doing great.
I have been warned of these skin blisters.
I am maintaining a water PH of 6.0, other than acidic water is there another method of preventing and or treating these blisters?

If it's bacterial, some of the broad spectrum tropical fish medications may help. If the water is filtered/changed frequently, the lowering of the ammonia levels may offset the bacterial growth. An acidic pH helps, too as you've stated.

If the condition continues after trying to control the water condition, a vet should be consulted.

Some basic requirements that are not above standard practices can prevent skin blisters, including keeping a warm basking spot and clean water. The best preventative is keeping low levels of salt. Use aquarium salt for 2-4ppt. Don't know specific gravity. If they already have them, keep low levels of salt and dip them in strong concentrations, such as 20ppt for ~20min.

If they persist, a culture will need to be taken at a vet.

Thank you!
Your post has reminded me of maintaining a low salinity level, and I will do so.
As for the clean water and basking site...I've got that covered!
I have noticed that stress seems to bring them (blisters) on. So no more daily checks on them unless they are out in the water, even then no handling at all.
Thanks again!
Mike
