calcium question

jasonmattes Nov 17, 2004 07:49 AM

Is it necessary to suplement calcium on tort food if they are being feed the mazuri tort diet? Or does the diet have everything they need as far as calcium is concerned?

Thanks Jason

I don't think it is necessary to add calcium. I found that this is another area where Mazuri demonstrates an odd trait. I've got one year old tortoises raised on the stuff without calcium supplementation and their shells are abnormally hard.

I say 'abnormal' based on the observation that most tortoises that I've come across usually have some 'give' in the shell at that age.

The ones I've raised don't have any 'give' after a year.

That is one of the many observed selling points that I have seen over the years that I've used it. As I say time and again you really can't argue with results.

Hi, I also feed my 11 month old redfoot 'Sage' Mazuri, and have been feeding it to him since he was 3 months old..I feed all he will eat of the Mazuri every 3rd day, greens and fruits with calcium lightly sprinkled on top on the other days. I to was wondering if Mazuri had calcium in it.. When I took Sage to the vet for a check up when he was 6 months old and the Vet remarked on how firm his shell was, I also took that as a good thing...Now at 11 months his shell has no give, rock hard and smooth...I don't know why but Sage LOVES the stuff !!The vet says 'Sage' is very healthy..
Lots of people have different views
on Mazuri, but a very healthy Sage, and I recommened it....
