Weird new mealworm species.... Help me out...

LeoGeoKing Nov 17, 2004 08:47 AM

OK, I received a shipment of mealworms today from a friend of mine in Kansas. A while back an owner of a pet store called him and said he could come get some free mealworms if he wanted them, and it turned out to be around 50,000. Heres the thing these don't look like regular mealworms they are the size of mealworms but the color of super worms kinda dark and move much faster than mealworms sorta of like the mini mealworms. He said it could be because they were raised and breed outside in his barn which is more like a house but nevertheless, is it safe for me too feed these guys to my geckos? He saiod he has been feeding them to all his animals and the store owner has also.Any info is apreciated.

From your description, that's what they sound like. They'll be great for your leos because they can last for a long time without pupating. Make sure you don't refrigerate them because it'll kill them if they do happen to be superworms.

Try to look up some pictures of Zophobas morio. superwormfarm.com has pictures too.

I womder...If you put a few in your fridge and they die, then they would probably be super worms right?

I had a couple of these come with mealworms from the pet store. I have no idea what they are but I don't think they are mealworms, at least the ones I've had haven't been. I don't know if I would risk feeding them even if they are free. I know a couple of other people have had them before, Snarks for one. I don't think anyone found out what they really are. The ones I have had are about one cm long, dark in color, move about three times as fast as mealworms, and look just a little different in their shape and markings.

Keep them for a while (2 weeks) before feeding them. If they get bigger they probably are supers and are safe to feed. The ones I have had stayed small.

They sound like Minimealworms (Tenebrio obscurus). They were featured in the Herpstuff section of the November issue of Reptiles. Here is the description they gave "These mealworms are approximately one-half to three-fourths of an inch in length. Minimealworms are active and encourage baby and juvenile reptiles to eat". They have a website: www.minimealworms.com
