Ambon yellow head from NERD are they generally tame?

Leiopython Nov 17, 2004 08:52 AM

I really think that I will go with an Ambon yellow head from NERD, even if I have to wait a couple of month, I don't want to buy from people I don't know and NERD have a good reputation.

On their website they said that their really tame retic and a pleasure to work with, but I have read on the internet that their not always so friendly, so I would like to know if some of you have Ambon yellow head or knows people who have some and if they are tame especially if they come from NERD.

Thank you all.

One thing to keep in mind about snakes is their personality varys from one snake to another. I have a Spotted Python how things hes a rock python, and a retic that thinks hes a corn snake. The only way to tell if a retic is going to be aggrsssive or not is to handle it, and if it is one the does strike, then the only way to break it of the habbit is regular handleing. Breeders/distributers like NERD dont have time to handle every animal and baby it produces to make/keep them calm. It is suggested agter generations of breeding in captivity they do calm down, but a retic, is a retic, is a retic...

IMO you might have a better shot of getting a calm monster form a well known breeder who you know has been breeding captive lines for a while, but still be prepared to get a fiesty little gy or girl. Your best bet would probably to go to a show and hand pick one, you'll have a better idea of what you are getting into...

These animals are generally CH or imported, so you will have serious variation in personality from one animal to the next...if you're set on an Ambon animal only, the best thing to do would be to call Andy or another distributor and tell him that you want a young animal that can be worked with. He's always been real straight with me on this. Hope this helps.

I have a completely unrelated pair of Ambon retics. I bought the male from a trusted vendor at a show who said that the snake did originate from NERD-he is one of the bright silver eyed Ambons. The female was purchased from a small private breeder I know that produced the snake himself. Both snakes have never bitten me or even attempted to strike. In their cages they have the typical retic feeding/territory responses. The female was and is super calm from the start and handled a lot-even in shed. The male silver eye was kept in a rack for a whole year and was not handled much before I got him. At first he was jumpy and not hook trained. Now he is doing just fine. I agree that each snake can have a different personality but this can be highly influenced by the actions of the owner.

Recently on the Kingsnake Python Classifieds a vendor is selling juvenile Ambon retics for $60!!! This price has been lowered just to move them as they are growing. You might want to check this out-I think the company is High Plains Herps. ProExotics vouches for these guys. Take care-Gill

Bob Clark has some really awesome yellow heads. I just picked one up from him $150 its 3ft and head is already bright yellow. Most of his are thai yellowheads and they generally have great temperments. Steve Gooch just posted some pics of bobs yellow heads on the clark forums.
