Help!! Parasites in stool, c.similis

JacksonsChamKeep Nov 17, 2004 02:02 PM

I found about 8 white parasites in my C.Similis stool today, i am going to take him to the vet. Is there any store bought medications? What will the vet charge? anything i can do immediately that will help?

all meds for parasitic or bacterial infection are by prescription only. parasites indiginous to reptiles are microscopic so I am not sure what you are seeing. fecals generally run $15-$25. For a few extra bucks, you may want to do a gram stain as well to look for bactreia. If you get a script for albon, panacur... I recomend using a probiotic like acidophiliz (especially with albon). There are also natural products like parazap that have success in some cases.

Of the ones you can easily see with naked eye ...

The long round ones (round worms)that look like worms are usually treated with Fenbendazole (Panacur) .

The flat ones (tapeworm) that look like grains of rice are usually treated with Praziquantel (Droncit)

You have to get these from your vet as they are not sold over the counter. These meds have to be accurately measured to work(differnet types of worms require different doses of the same meds )

You should also have the vet do complete fecals
for the worms you can't see . Fecals have to be done more than once as sometimes depending on the parasite the eggs may not be in the stool at the time the fecal floats are done even if the lizard has them ... treatment for all these worms is more than a one shot deal too .

If you are worried about cost contact your local herp society as some of them have vets that come out to their meetings which deparisitze the animals at the meeting for a very minor fee. If they don't have a vet that does this they might be able to recomend one in your area that is good and resonable (although you should never cheap out on a vet ... good vets are hard to find and deserve to be paid well for their services )
