Normal behavior for a hibernating tegu

musashai Nov 17, 2004 03:35 PM

Sam wakes up almost everyday at about 11 and stays up for about 30 mins or so basking. She wont eat anything and puffs up and gets all irritated when I try to pet her. She even tries to bite me. Just wanting to know if this is normal b/c she is getting really skinny compared to what she was a month and a half ago when she started hibernating and if the aggression is just normal for a hibernating tegu. Sam is an argentine b&w who is about 6 months old and about 18? inches.

I have seen tegus get more aggressive during feeding, shedding, while ill, etc.. but not while trying to hibernate. If Sam was used to you (if she doesn't fear you) prior to trying to hibernate she should be fine with you now. I'd say it's likely you are not having enough quality contact with her or perhaps she isn't feeling well.
