This may be gross but, could juvi dragons eat maggots?

gixer Jun 30, 2003 09:22 PM

I was just wondering because a guy I met uses maggots for fishing bait then gives the extras to his turtles. He said they love them. They seem like they would be soft, I would think that if beardies could eat them, you would have to watch where they came from. I mean you wouldn't want to pick them off some road-kill.

any experience or comments?

Where does he get them? Are you sure they are not waxworms? I know you can get them at bait stores and some people call them maggots.
I wouldn't use "fly" maggots, you find. They live in filth and can harbor diseases.

He said he gets the from a guy that raises them all summer, along with other baits. He said he has great luck fishing with them. I'll check into what he uses to start the larve (this could be very gross).

Well, if you are able to grow them your self and you know they weren't crawling through the trash or a dead carcass or something, I guess the disease issue wouldn't be a problem.
I don't have a clue as to the nutritional value they hold. I haven't seen them on any charts.

Let us know if you find anything.

do raise fly larvae to feed as a treat to their dragons, they raise them on fresh fruits etc, i think the type i knew of was a blue fly or something of the sort, anyhow yes, have heard of it, not as a main protein tho, just as a treat

I have seen maggots for sale at a Swedish expo. I am not sure if they are nutritious though - or if you should give them to baby dragons. What I DO know is that those maggots SMELLS awful! I bought some - but got rid of them the next day because of the horrible smell. Yuk!
