So ... my largest BP, an 8 year old male named spike, got out of his tank last week. Totally my fault ... I guess I just forgot to re-latch it after I cleaned out a poo.
He was out for around 24 hrs ... I don't know for sure because I was away on business for about 24 hrs.
Anyways ... I came home .. checked all the tanks, noticed that he was gone and flipped out. Having never lost a snake, I remembered all that I had read on the ks.com forums, and I knew he'd go somewhere tight, warm and dark. There are about a million spots like that in my herp room, which is also my storage room in my basement.
I had about 50 places that I wanted to search. The first was under the full size fridge. I ripped off the grate and there he was. First place I looked. Cuz its small and dark and warm. And about 10 feet from his enclosure.
I pulled him out, put him back in his enclosure, and the lid is now bolted, velcro'ed down and has my biggest textbooks on it.
The point of this post is that, apparently, escaped snakes WILL go to to the closest, darkest, warmest spot that they can find.
I would almost recommend that ppl, including myself, set up some sort of enclosure, on the ground, with a heatpad ... sort of like an escape hut. I'll bet people who lose snakes would have better luck finding them if they had a pre-set snake hut with the heat always on and near the tanks.
