I got the leucistic ratsnake...have a few q's and pics

Tugi Nov 18, 2004 12:57 AM

He's about 5 feet long, 4 years old. He's dog tame and lets anyone pick him up and hold him. My little brother had never held a snake before and this one was perfectly content to hang out on his shoulders.

Here are my q's, have pity on me I've never owned a snake before: Should I feed him once a week or once every two weeks? When I feed him, should I feed him in a cardboard box or paperbag?

He has a hard tip at the tip of his tail, presumably skin that didn't come off his last shed (He shed about a week ago). Should I soak him in warm water, or spray reptile shedding aid on him?

Mine is totally not psycho. I took him to Petsmart today to get a thermometer, and he lets everyone hold him and pet him. I know you're supposed to give them a week or so to get used to their new home, but he's in the same cage that he has been in for the past 4 years or so and he's been used to me taking him out and carrying him around. A girl at Petsmart professed her undying love for my snake and offered to babysit him for free if I ever need somewhere for him to go.

Iv'e had mine ever since she was a tiny hatchling she was so mean i almost never even tried to hold her. She just recently started to mellow out when i fed her by hand a few times. Here she is again in a not too freindly mood.

I feed my adult snakes one large/jumbo mouse every 8 days. I feed my snakes in their enclosures, and I use newspaper as substrate so there is no chance of any substrate being ingested and causing impaction. If you use shredded aspen or any of the other woody substrates, then I would feed it in a seperate container such as a sterilite 28 qt. Once you have the snake fed and moved back into its enclosure, you shouldnt handle it again for atleast 48 hrs. This will allow it time to digest a large portion of the meal and will not regurge the mouse.

As far as the tail, if it is old skin, it needs to come off, otherwise it could act like a tourniquet and cut the blood supply off to the tail. This could cause the tip of the tail to fall off. If it is old skin, the easiest way to get it off, is to use a very moist warm washcloth and use it to soak the old shed area. Once it has soaked, then you can use the washcloth to wipe the skin off. Works very well. You can also use this method for a snake that has had a bad shed with lots of old retained skin and eyecaps!!
Good luck and hope this helps.
