Northeast US climate

matt43 Nov 18, 2004 01:21 AM

Hello all,

I am considering becoming a tortoise owner. However, I am aware that these creatures require specific climates to stay healthy. Therefore, can anyone recommend a species which can comfortably be kept outdoors during summertime in Central New York State? Keep in mind, summers are extremely variable here. They can be hot, cool, dry wet...just about anything. We see it all.

Thanks!

I have much room. My backyard is just an empty, underutilized grass lot that would make a great enclosure. I definitely have the patience and am building my knowledge. I have kept aquatics for 5 years with great success. I'm always on the 'net and cracking the books to learn more. I am even in the process of joining a herp society up here!

I would really like a leopard tortoise, but I am unsure if the unpredictable summer weather up here would be healthy and suitable for one.

Thanks for the reply(s).

...sounds like you already had your prefs...and leopards are more of the decent looking mid size torts, one other good thing is that they don't go off in winter but stays awake to entertaint you even when snow are all around (eeeek!)...and if you really had all that commitments as per say, there's nothing can prevent you from building a decent habitat for your new bambino(s) to withstand the elements regardless which part of this planet you (and your pet) reside...
