Brumating Easterns

c&f Nov 18, 2004 06:01 AM

Hi; I have already read the hognose sites, but wanted to check in with some of you on brumation techniques for Easterns, and my questions are as follows:

Temp range? Low/high?
Most effective duration of brumation?
Feeding after brumation, but before mating?
How long to feed (if necessary) before pairing?

I'd appreciate any other tips, as well as possible problems to watch out for. From what I've read and heard it seems best to go straight from the warm room to brumation temps without gradually lowering the temps over time, which as I'm told can compromise immunity. Any comments?

Thanx

Temp range? Low/high? i keep mine between 48-58 F
Most effective duration of brumation? I like 12 weeks
Feeding after brumation, but before mating? yes, esp with females
How long to feed (if necessary) before pairing? 2-3 meals is fine

Snakes go from snake room to brumation room with no buffer. kEEP SNAKES OFF FEED FOR 3 WEEKS AND GIVE THEM A WARM water bath before putting them down.

Thank for the info! I'm trying to get the temps right in my cold spot, but the weather is not cooperating with me. Right now I'm in the 60-64 range, which is why I wanted to confirm the brumation temps.

Question: If the area of brumation does occasionally get into the low 60's is it much of a problem? Should it be totally avoided?

The last thing I want is to put these animals in danger!

nope, low 60's are not a prob! Just keep it nice and dark.

I'm happy to hear that! I only have 1 spot I would deem safe for brumation where it will never get so cold as to be dangerous to the snakes, but the temps have not been optimal with the current weather. I'll be insulating the area to create a barrier against the warm room temps this weekend. I think it should make a big difference by hopefully dropping the temps another 5 degrees or so.

Thanx very much for your help!
