Where can our reptile rescue find a dedicated iguana rescue?

rugbyman2000 Nov 18, 2004 08:55 AM

What's up iguana fans,
Our nonprofit reptile rescue, Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, has been so overwhelemed with green iguana calls we finally had to stop taking them in so we could give more attention and care to the rest of our reptiles. We're generally referring folks to greenigsociety.org (free iguana adoption message boards) or our rescue's free online adoption message boards, but I was hoping we could do a little better than that.

I've heard there are plenty of good folks out there with dedicated iguana rescues, some of which are down south where iguanas can even live in larger outdoor habitats. Can anyone help direct me to some of these places? Any names, phone numbers, or emails would be great. Again, this is stictly to organize rescue contacts for our nonprofit reptile rescue. Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately, even iguana rescues are overwhelmed. we are doing plenty of educational shows these days. Also, are the carnivals in your state giving iguanas as carnival game prizes? We took almost all of ours from the carnival winners this year.

I've had one mom recently come to me desperate to give up an ig her son won at the fair, but I don't know if it was from my state of PA. I haven't seen them being given away myself, but you'd really think there would be a way to put a stop to it. Impulse buys at the pet store are one thing, but PRIZES AT THE FAIR? These guys aren't goldfish! Just seems so foolish.

I've heard captive releases have established strong colonies (thousands according to one FL resident) in FL, but even FL gets too coold for them and they lose toes and feet over the winter.

I know there are a lot of great ig owners out there, but it just doesn't seem like there's enough people for all the igs who need homes. I wish there was a natural habitat where they could be released, but who know's what they would be introducing into that ecosystem?

In PA, it is illegal to give them as prizes. If this has been done, it needs to be reported.
