Gravid Female Veild

RyanDonnelly Nov 18, 2004 10:16 AM

I Have mated my female and male for my first time. It has been exactly 35 days since i allowed them to mate and i was wondering when i should worry about her being egg bound because im getting nervous. I provided an egg laying tub and she doesent like it very much when i put her in there so i put her in there leave check on her in 15 minutes and if she still is trying to get out i put a stick in that goese up to her ficus tree so she is definately learning where the egg laying site is. She is looking really fat like she is about to pop and I THINK she just got this way becasue before i was questioning if she was even pregnant but now I KNOW because i can see 2 buldges in her stomach twards her hind legs and i just know thats what it has to be. She is a fairly light green color with the robbins egg blue spots on her back and orange spots all over. If anyone has any advice i would be very appreciative. THANKS! Ryan

Just make sure she can not see other animals or chams from her cage so she does not stress out and become egg bound. I put the laying bin in my cage with a place to climb in and out on her own so she can decide on her own when to lay the eggs. If she needs extra privacy you can drape a towel or sheet across the front of her cage. Make sure you give extra calcium in her food so she can lay the eggs.
Also if you can get a picture of the bulges she has I can see if it looks normal. I had a female that got some weird bulges that got huge and she was eggbound but don't panick because it may be the eggs showing. If you can post a picture I may be able to tell from the photo. You can send them to me directly if it's easier for you.

They can take anywhere between 4-8 weeks before they lay. Even longer for older females. The first clutch always seem to be the earliest after copulation. If she's still eating, she's not ready yet. My females ALWAYS stop eating a day or two before laying.
Hope this helps,
Cricket

Thats good will she look even fatter a couple days before she lays them because i never noticed her being that fat until 3 days ago and she is just HUGE! and you can see an egg sticking out her side. Thanks for the response. Ryan
