pyxie vs. dwarf pyxie

buffysmom Nov 18, 2004 11:04 AM

I'm noticing in people's pics of their pyxie frogs that they seem to have a lot of texture, ridges & such, on their backs. My dwarf pyxie is smooth-skinned with color patterns, but no ridges. Is this a difference between dwarfs & the "originals" or is it just an individual difference between my frog & the larger ones I'm seeing on the forum?

My local herp shop has a adult dwarf pixie for sale and it still has all the ridges and bumps and so forth that I see on the giants. I don't know, it may be just a frog to frog thing. He advertises it on KS all the time, i'll see if I can find his ad and post the pic... Jon

Size does matter..... Here are a few ways to tell, Size, the shape of the nose, and the strip down the back. This is a picture of a albino dwarf, but thinks he's the real true giant. I have two males and both call almost every night, they are so cool.

Hmmm. Well, mine was sold to me as a dwarf pyxie & I've had him over a year & he's not really grown, so I assume he's an adult. He's pretty "typical frog" size- smaller than my pacman. My store also has an adult giant, who is also pretty dull looking, like that dwarf pic you posted, John. But mine is really pretty- he has flecks of gold & a gold stripe down his back on a forest green background. his throat & belly are bright yellow. He/she does not call. His skin is smooth.
Is he a dwarf pyxie, or was I sold the wrong species?
Here he/she is- Butrose Butrose Froggy

I'm no expert on diferrentiating between the two but it looks like a dwarf to me. I beleive that snakguy said something about dwarfs retaining the stripe down there back as well as sometimes the pattern. All of the adult giants that I have seen have been the plain drab olives or light browns with whitish or yellow bellies.

I think he's a cutie, so I'm glad to know he'll stay looking that way.

Butrose Butrose Ghali (not sure I've spelled the last name right) is a French member of the United Nations. I saw the name (Butrose Butrose Froggy)on a frog-name suggestion sheet somewhere on the net & I liked it

Dwarf definitely. Adult dwarf pyxies keep their pattern and dorsalateral stripe. They are usually blotched.
