More on the NY ban

jasonmattes Nov 18, 2004 12:55 PM

Well this came across one of the groups i am on...
be sure to read that part where we should thank the govenor for protecting people from all those dangerous animals...what a dumbass....
I have heard that more people are killed my deer each year than snakes...i dont know if its true but maybe somone else does..

On November 3rd, Governor Pataki signed into law a measure that will
ban the keeping of certain exotic animals as pets in New York State.
S. 7616 (and A.11753-A a chapter amendment to that bill) make it
illegal to keep primates, large cats and many dangerous snakes as
pets in New York. Those owning prohibited animals on January 1st,
when the new law takes effect, will be permitted to keep them
provided that they can comply with stringent animal care and public
safety requirements.
The chapter amendment to the law makes technical changes in addition
to expressly permitting ownership of New World monkeys trained to
assist people who are paralyzed from the neck down. Such ownership
will be predicated on securing a permit from the state.
Stopping the private ownership of wild animals inherently unsuited
to live as family pets will help prevent senseless tragedies that
result when these animals attack their owners, escape from their
homes, or are abandoned when they become too difficult to handle.
Please thank Governor Pataki for signing these important animal
welfare measures into law. He can be reached at (518) 474-8390, or
by going to www.state.ny.us/governor/, and clicking on "contact the
governor".
Sincerely,
Stacy Wolf, Esq.

Well, what I am certainly getting a kick out of is what they consider a "wild" animal....

I know that my Black Throat, Carpet, and GREEN Burm HAVE NEVER SEEN THE WILD BEFORE.... All are CBB, so TECHNICALLY, they are not wild...

But anyway, I know it's like a "bend" of the rules...

Anyway, NYS can go to h*ll.... Or as the line goes from many good westerns (although altered to suit this topic)... They can take my snakes and monitor when they pry them from my cold dead body.

Wow.

Yeah, I'll be sure to thank all those wonderful people in government who are working SO HARD to keep me safe from myself.

This makes me so mad I can't even see straight.

WHO HERE HAS HEARD OF THE FREESTATE PROJECT??

Argh.... OK, that's it, I can't type anymore, I'm so mad. I'm done.

i imagine its only a matter of time before other states start trying to do the same thing....like someone already said....they can have my snakes when they pry them from my cold dead body!!

It won't be "only a matter of time" if we can put a stop to it!

Laws can be rescinded! When ferrets first started to become popular as pets, a lot of states reacted with the same fear as they are now with snakes and banned them, listing ferrets as wild animals. Now that ferrets are becoming more popular and accepted pets, however, the laws are being changed.

I dunno... Even though the law is passing, I would still encourage people to write intelligent letters to the governer explaining our situation -- that these are our pets, that we geniunely care about them, that they are no more or less dangerous than many other commonly kept animals -- and requesting that he now make an effort to get the law overturned. It's better to do something than nothing!

Lastly, I think that it's becoming increasingly important to support groups which can act as a voice for our industry, educating the public and government alike. I know that the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council is one group, and I know of at least one strictly herp group which is being formed now.

Basically, I don't just think we should give up the fight -- these laws don't just get made on their own. Some frightened, ignorant citizen had to complain loudly enough for a law to be made. We need to speak louder!

" Those owning prohibited animals on January 1st, when the new law takes effect, will be permitted to keep them provided that they can comply with stringent animal care and public safety requirements. "

What does this entail? Does anyone know??

seablazer Nov 19, 2004 08:18 PM

From what I've heard you have to meet certain requirements:
1) Minimum age of 21
2) Safe housing
3) Standard housing depicted by Zoos, etc.

I believe there is more, but that is the gist I got from an animal rescue operation today. I got to go on my first rescue (I work in a private pet shop, but we get lots of calls of problems, this one happened to come from a cousin of the owner about 3 abandoned Macaws)... Anyway, the main rescuer(she currently has 3 alligators confiscated from idiots in the city) said most pets that are owned and IN THE STATE before the 1st of January will be allowed being that they fit the above 3 requirements, along with a fee for the permit...

The thing that could cause many problems is the fact that with the permit, it gives the ASPCA or whatever you local chapter is called the right to make surprise visits to your house, and they can also report the ownership of "dangerous" animals to your home insurance company. That could kill many wallets...

Anyway, if I can get any info, I will post it here. So far we've only just heard various rumors about everything, but when they become fact, I have a feeling since I do work for a private pet store, I will get the information down to the littlest detail.

Our freedom is being striped away slowly via laws. Sooner or later the gov will control everything in our life. We can protest all we want. Write letters, phone calls, etc. but will have no result. They ask for our help when election time come, but when we need them even to rethink something, were are they. Promise this and that equal nothing. Diss us when we need help, but come crying when their budget is low.

"Goverment knows what best!!" My @#$@#.... They pass small law here and there to chip away our freedom slowly and slowly. Are we slowly drifting toward communist, but a smarter republic communist where they have a list of everything we do and own. And tax us according to their choosing?????
