What is MDR made out of?

fhayden1 Nov 18, 2004 02:11 PM

I went to Home Depot and they have sheets of MDR. I asked the guy what was stronger MDR or Melanine? He said MDR and its lighter too.
I bought two 4'X8' sheets and made a sweater box rack out of it.

Also, what the easiest way to heat the rack? It holds 7 Sterlite sweater boxes.

Thanks,
Frank

I've heard of MDO and MDF, but never MDR. What does the surface look like? Does the interior consist of layers or is it the same as the surface?

Chris,
It's MDF not MDR. Sorry about that.

No big deal. MDF is neither stronger nor lighter than melamine. In fact it's slightly heavier than melamine. Also, it does not hold screws well so I can't say it's stronger either.

Sorry, but you were misinformed.

Regardless, it's certainly cheaper and it will work fine for a typical sweater box rack. Did you coat it with contact paper? That will help it with moisture resistance.

Chris,
I didn't coat the rack with contact paper, however, that sounds like a great idea. This rack was really a "test" rack anyway. I just learn how to build a rack. My next rack I'm making out of good plywood. For example, oak or birch. I costs $45 per sheet but its a lot cheaper then buying one from someone else.

Your right that the MDF board doesn't hold screws or nails well. The one side of the rack loosed up when I moved it across the room.

I'm finding the same thing out right now but I'm going to go ahead and finish my enclosure witht eh MDF. If only I could have found Melamine here in ABilene but nobody carries the 4'x8' sheets. I hope your rack turns out ok. I coated mine with 3 coats of Urethane so it would withstand the moisture.
