Egg Question

KimH Nov 18, 2004 03:14 PM

I have my first crested eggs due to hatch any day. This am one had a small amount of fluid coming from it..no baby peeking out. Is this normal? I have never hatched out cresteds before, only Chondros..and if they are not pipping when they are supposed to they get manually pipped. Should I do this with this particular egg? My daughter checked it after school..still no baby and the egg not longer looks wet she said. (the fluid was thick)

Any advice/input would be appreciated..I am hoping I did not kill this baby by doing nothing.

do you know how many days they've been incubating?
i had 2 texas horned lizard eggs start seeping ( from a crack that was the entire length of the egg) while the other 6 were still fine. i left them go and they sort of seeled back up and then hatched over a week later. as long as the gecko is attached to the yolk and is still protected it will survive if not disturbed. you obviously don't want them to hatch prematurely.

Several earlier posts discussed that ''sweating'' is often the first sign of eggs about to hatch. So thats probally a good sign.
I think the hardest thing about cresties is learning patience. You wait for them to mature..you wait for them to breed, you wait for them to lay,you wait 60-90 days to hatch (possibly even longer if your temps are low) .
The urge to open them is strong .early on I had one egg hatch and the clutchmate didnt.. after a day I thought hmm it cant get out, what if it dies? So I opened the egg..what I found was a very sad looking deformed baby ..alive but not looking too good. And far too weak to do anything but wiggle.I made it a small bed and debated wether to let nature take its course or end its suffering.
Cresties in the wild have been hatching for probally millions of years without our help..from now on Ill let nature take its path.Dont feel you killed it by doing nothing it might be for the best ... and chances are its fine ,its just not in the hurry you are
