How Old to Eat a Pinkie?

Shnake Nov 18, 2004 08:12 PM

Got a albino checkered born in June. Pet store guy said he got most of the clutch to eat pinkies, but the three he had left wouldn't. I've had him about three weeks and he eats guppies no problem. Not interested in worms though. Odd, huh? Anyway, I would like to get him on pinkies be he seems too small. How old should a garter be before it could eat a pinkie? (I could try pinkie parts I guess.) Thanks.

Basically you should try to get them to eat pinkies as soon as they can eat them with no problem.

I think my western terrestrial was only about 7 inches when I gave him his first pinki.

Start with day old pinks since they are the smallest. If it still refuses, try killing the pinki and braining it, sometimes this will trigger a feeding response. Otherwise, if it's eating fish, worms etc. try rubbing these on the pinki. Sometimes it helps if you use a prekilled pinki and wash it prior to scenting it.

They can eat them at a very young age. Wait until the snake is hungry, thaw out a small pinky, rub it on the head with a fish that it normally eats, and I'm sure it'll hungrily chow it down.
