Handling Snakes

NickR Nov 18, 2004 09:48 PM

I have gotten many suggestions on the matter of handling my new (somewhat of a baby) Pueblan Milksnake. Eventually I want him to be comfortable with being handled but I for now I want him to grow and be healthy. Some say that handling Milks as youngsters is bad but how bad is it? Personal stories or info anyone?

Many Thanks,
Nick R

I have a pueblan milk. They tend to be pretty skittish as juveniles but they will calm down. I would suggest handling it for short periods of time so it gets used to you. Mine is one of the few snakes I have that has tagged me but it didnt hurt at all. Bled for longer than I expected but did not hurt. Good luck with yours.

A lot of the handling-dont handle, directly has to do with how your snake is feeding. If it is doing very well and has good weight and feeding responses then limited handling is ok. If however, it is a problem feeder-or starts losing weight, that could be stress and the snake likely needs to be left as alone as possible till the problem is corrected. A hide box is a very good idea, especially under those circumstances.
