my baby lost his tail (sorry long post)

itsazoo Nov 18, 2004 09:52 PM

I know it's fairly common for Cresteds to drop their tails...although I thought it mainly occured due to fear or stress. I rarely handle my little guy, just peek in on him when I feed and mist him at night, but when I went in to give him his baby food tonight he was all huddled up under his log with his tail lying next to him. Any thoughts on what might have caused it?
He lives alone in a 5.5 gallon tank (until he's bigger - only about 2.5 inches right now) that has "background" on three sides, vines to play and hide in, his little half log and a water dish. I feed crickets and babyfood on alternating days, he did have a couple of crickets left over from last night but that's fairly common for him. (There are cats in the house but they generally show very little interest in the herp tanks...they prefer the fish)

It would be real hard to guess precisely why your baby dropped its tail, but DO NOT underestimate the effect catching a glance of a cat would have on a defenseless little gecko. An acquaintance bought one of my babies, assuring me that her cats never paid any attention to her herps, and you guessed it, the last time I saw her she admitted that surprise-of-surprises, the cats busted the screen top and tore my baby gecko to bits! Now I won't sell any to folks with cats, unless they are serious hobbyists with separate herp rooms that are off-limits to cats.

i never had any escape from this but i have had 2 screen tops destroyed from cats trying to look out the window and falling into the cage. the first one wasn't too bad, but the second time the screen was almost entirely off the lid and the lizards didn't leave.
