Temperary Enclosure ---- Newbie

rhino85 Nov 19, 2004 12:19 AM

I am planing on buying a Blue Tegu this weekend at the Georgia reptile expo. My enclosure is not yet finished, and I was wondering if I am able to keep a small tegu in a 40 gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck tub. It is 36.8"Lx18"Wx26"H. Does it matter if its not see through and also how big of a tegu can be kept in it for about 2-3 weeks? Thanks Alot

I don't see a problem with that, as long as it is temporary like you say. I've kept a Tegu under similar conditions and it did just fine. I'd suggest putting down a layer of cypress mulch, adding a hidebox, food and water dishes and a source of heat (basking light). One worry, can it get out or can something else get in? I'd fashion a screen top and a way to affix it if there is any danger of escape or predation by household pets.
It might actually be a good "settling in" period for your new tegu. In the tub it would have very little visual stress and may feel more secure in the small space.

Good luck!

As Jim stated, the 40 gallon rubbermaid tank will be large enough. You can house baby tegus in a 30 gallon aquarium for a few months before they really need a larger enclosure. I have some care sheets on Tegus, located at theTegu.com

The only thing I would worry about is how to seal the container. You could use a screen, but a screen isn't normally very durable and a determined cat or a dog can get through a screen. The hide, mulch, etc is required as stated but so is proper temps and a basking light. If you use a screen you cant sit a basking light on top of it so you would probably have to hang the light with a rope or get a clamping type.

Just a few things you need to keep in mind.
