Crested only eats crickets

cb_at_usf Nov 19, 2004 05:27 AM

I bought my crested from a local pet store last September, and she is approximately 4 to 5 months old. Since I've had her, I've never seen her eat Crested Gecko Diet or babyfood and by the amount I give her it appears that she does not eat it. This concerns me, but all I've seen her eat is crickets. She's eating 3 to 5 medium crickets a night. When I put the cricket dish in the tank she's eating within 5 minutes. When I try just CGD, I never see her near the dish. What I'm doing is covering the crickets in CGD. That way, at least she's getting some of the nutrition she needs and aquiring a taste for the CGD. She appears to be digesting and growing nicely, so I hope she's ok. Do any of you have any suggestions or ideas on this? Thanks!

Here's a couple things to try.

1st..Don't use water for the diet, use "Bolthouse strawberry Bannnana" It's an all natural juice smothie you can find in the refrigerated vegitables and sallad dressing area's in Albertsons, Publix? etc. Works great & much healthier than baby food.

2nd..keep up with the CG diet dusting for now but don't neglect there calcium requirements.

3rd..If they are eating th diet chances are there not going to do it in front of you. I've only caught mine doing it a handfull of times and I have over 20. They also eat very little so don't expect to see a huge differnce.

4th..Always offer the diet even when feeding crickets, however alternate days, donot feed crickets every day. If there not stuffed to the brim on crickets there is a much better chance they'll eat the diet.

5th..experiment hold a finger out with crested gecko diet made with water on one and one with bolthouse (at differnt times) see how more eager they are to eat the bolthouse they should lap it up off your finger.

if you really want it to eat either baby food or the cgd don't feed it for 2 or 3 days then see if it will take it. 2 or 3 days is absolutely no problem for a crested gecko to go without eating. since it is younger i would try not feeding it for 1 full day, then on the next evening try either of the things it won't eat.

If you offer a child icecream everyday he will eat it.But dont be surprized when the carrots are still on the plate.
Most cresteds LOVE crickets ..Most cresties arent thrilled with Crested Gecko Diets taste. Cresties eat crickets in front of you because crickets move and trigger the hunting/capture instinct.Otherwise they are very secretive little eaters.

Putting the CGD on the crickets actually improves the likelyhood they will take to crested gecko diet. But only if you dont feed them crickets so often. Given a choice a crestie will wait a day or two for crickets before bothering with the CGD , Feed crickets less often and they will start eating the diet.

devils suggestion sounds very interesting and makes alot of sense.. Im off to buy some of that water and check it out.
