taming a mean boa

Dan Hoffman Nov 19, 2004 07:03 AM

A little background about my experience. I have had my redtail for about 2 years now. Everything has been healthy. She is a cross breed between Colombian and N. Brazilian. I bought her at a reptile show when she was a tiny baby and she was my first snake.

I handled her regularly her first year with no problems. She never tried to strike at me. Well the last year, I've been lazy about handling her and I've been handling her less and less. I haven't held her in my hands for about six months now. I've been taking her out of her cage with a snake hook and placing her in her feeding container. when she's finished I place her back in the cage with the hook. I've noticed lately she has become very mean. Every time I open her cage she comes out of her hide like its feeding time, ready to strike.

I know it's my fault for not giving her enough attention. are there any tips to get her to calm down. I can take her out of the cage with the hook, but i can't pick her up with my hands at all without being struck at.

if you begin to handle her one or twice a week she'll calm down. Just take her out with the hook and allow her to crawl on to your hand... 20-30 minute sessions a couple times a week will calm her down eventually.
