cv768 Nov 19, 2004 10:20 AM

What works for scenting mice? Fire Belly toads?

Basically...what can we find at a pet store that usually works for scenting mice?

Thanks.

(I'm new to the whole hognose thing)

i use tuna fish water. dont use the oil! just buy a cheap can of tuna fish and drain the water. i freeze mine in a ziploc bag and then rub the warm thawed out mice on the ice. works great!!!

I use chicken broth. Its like 50cents for a big can that lasts awhile. Just dip the pinkie in the chicken broth.

From a pet store, i would try a green tree frog

Anyone else have any good scenting methods?

So far we've got dead frogs, tuna water frozen, and chicken broth...

A product called Lizard Maker has some success stories on this board.

We have had success using wild caught toads. We keep them in a plastic shoe box and place mice in the box overnight. Or we pick the toads up and use their natural defense mechanism (urination) as the scenting agent. This works almost every time; for western hognose at least.

I wouldn't use firebelly toads at all. toxic asian frogs probably AREN'T good for north american hognoses. stick to north american toads of the genus bufo. i've used american toads, green toads, and fowler's toads and found greens and fowlers best for toad scenting.
