Venom?

Nomadofthehills Nov 19, 2004 01:47 PM

Do you think waters like most coulbrids these days may have some venom? When my little guy grabs aminnow, he just holds it for like ten minutes, untill it just dies. Even when it is still in the water...

Both Nerodia and Thamnophis are suspected to have mildly toxic saliva, which is no surprise given their ecology and phylogeny. The saliva is probably mostly effective against amphibians and maybe fish to lesser degree. Out of the hundreds of bites I've received from these two genera, I have only had reactions from a Bluestripe Ribbon Snake, which chewed on me for a good ten minutes. I had some noticeable itching, burning, and swelling which lasted maybe an hour.
