BREEDING QUESTIONS

S1NPLYS1K Nov 19, 2004 02:03 PM

We (me n mah gf) have a 6 month old female leo (see pic below ;]) and since I'm all into lizards and herpetoculture now I've become interested in breeding her...anybody that can help me out in this department i would appreciate it...;]

I know nothing about this...so i don't even know where to begin with questions...hmm maybe...what constitutes a suitable male? what conditions need to be present for breeding? that's really all i can think of...

let me know!! Thanks!!

Well...we didn't breed any of our until they were 1 year old and at least 50 to 60 grams. I was told that by many breeders and now we have bred 2 females and had alot of success. The reason for waiting to breed is because younger females are more prone to becoming egg bound. So even though we wanted to breed we waited for the safety of our leos. As far as a male it depends...you can breed a female with any male, but if you want anything other than normals then you need to breed her to a morph that is the same as her.

60 grams is alittle extream....... Females should be atleast 50 grams...... Males can be smaller..... It is fine to breed a 40 gram male.....

You are correct in a way..... It really depends on the leos overall condition..... Size and mass should be taken into account not just its weight.....

Thanks guys...i appreciate the responses...

1st let me say that my leo is about 6 months old...so i'll be waiting another 6 to breed her due to the reasons you all stated...i'll have to get a scale to weigh her...i'll do that soon, i woudnt' mind knowing how much she weighs...

now as far as getting different morph's...if i didn't read any of that wrong...your saying that if i get a male leo the same morph as her...they'll produce other morph's besides normals...correct? She is a hypo-golden btw...

anything else i should know? Any climate changes need to be taken care of to provide proper heat for courting conditions? I read somewhere where temperature matters when attempting to breed leo's...is this also correcT? if so do any of you know the proper temperature?

THANKS!

Gregg is actually correct. Males can be bred at at least 40 grams and females can be bred at at least 45 (not advised, though)....... Females should be bred at about 50 - 60 grams. "Some" females will not reach 60 grams.

I have to agree here... I have bred males at 45 grams with no problem, and females at just over 50 who were down to 44 by the time they were done laying (I removed her when shedropped below 50, but she still layed two clutches of eggs that brought her down)
-------- minimum --- preferred ---
Males___|__40 g___|__at least 45 g
Females_|__45 g___|__at least 50 g

Again, it depends on over healthiness of the animal as well. Obviously a really skinny 50 grams female is not ok (such as some giants, ect).
