Vet Results for injured Oustalets

Lyn Nov 19, 2004 04:35 PM

I took Cera to the meet the Vet today. He was optimistic about her outlook. She was very well behaved, I was very proud of her. Her new treatment will be twice daily treatments of Nolvasan and Silvadene (I might be spelling those wrong, bottles are down stairs) and once a day treatment of Baytril. She has enough Baytril for 3 weeks and she'll be on the Nolvasan and Silvadene until her mouth is totally healed up. She has lost some of her upper and lower lip in the front of her mouth, she may or may not grow that back. She otherwise seems fine and the buildup around her mouth will eventually fall off. The vet did pull the loosest of it off, the rest is still too attached to her flesh to be removed without causing her injury. The skin underneath the sections he pealed off looked good. Tender, but healthy. I didn't take any new photos today, figured she'd had enough between the vet trip and the new treatment. I will continue to take photos as she recovers though. If you missed my post below, here is a photo taken last Friday when I got her. I'm guessing her injury was caused during importation or poor housing at the whole saler. I'll never know for sure. I really love her and am looking forward to moving her into her larger enclosure once she heals up a bit more.

Hi Lyn,

What a trooper she is !! I am so glad she found her way in to your caring hands.

My only question is the Nolvasan. Quite some time ago there was a thread re: this treatment. In that case it was being given internally which many of us objected to and posted label warnings. It is typically used as a cleaning disenfectant at vets to wipe down tables, equipment etc. If it is used topically maybe that is OK, but if she is ingesting it...well, I think I would question it - though your vet sounds quite capabale . Would like others thoughts on this since it has not come up for a long time.

There is loss too often on this forum so it is always nice to hear of stories like this - after such a terrible ordeal. Look forward to her healing

The Nolvasan is diluted and used to flush the outside of the mouth, I hold her with her face down so she won't get it in her mouth. There is a possibility she might get just a little in there. Same with the Silvadine, that's only for the outside and my vet said don't get it actually inside her mouth. The Baytril does go in though. That's for her to actually ingest. If it's a concern, I could always put the Nolvasan on a Qtip to apply it, instead of squirting it over the wounded area. Thank you for the advise that it could be harmful if swallowed, I will increase my precautions to prevent that from happening. I sure love her and don't want to do anything that would make her worse!

nolvasan (chlorhexadine) is very safe for topical application, especially when diluted. We use it to flush dog and cat mouths all the time. As long as it is diluted and she doesn't drink large quantities it is fine.

Lyn & goatvet,

I figured it was just used topically in this case, but there had been a thread several months ago about a vet who had someone's chameleon ingesting it. Either the vet was nuts or the keeper totally misunsderstood. It was a lengthy discussion and I think the keeper ended up listening to us
