Handling Young Cresteds

deadoktober Nov 19, 2004 06:17 PM

One of my two crested's has a spunk personality.

While the other is very sociable and timid...

my spunk crested from what I can see...doesn't really like to be held...once he calms down he's fine.

I know that most young cresteds really don't like to be held until they are older. what my question is...How often should I handle him just so I keep him used to humans and hands? Once or twice a week?

Any advice?

ive found handling my cresteds 1-2 times a week makes them very hospitable in terms of handling. i reward my gentle handling with a few hours on a few large plants/small trees around my living room. they roam freely while i hover around the room observing. handling cresteds is a very rewarding experience, as im sure youre aware of. as long as your gentle and your hands arent cold, you should be fine to handle them whenever you want.

my crestie is one of the jittery ones... and i want to handle him a couple times a week, but everytime he notices me coming close, he turns around and runs! he doesn't mind me sticking a spoon of baby food in his face as long as i do that slowly (he'll lick that up real fast), but when it's my hand coming closer he just jets so i dont have a chance to handle him at all.

how do i approach him so that i dont scare him to drop his tail?

I have a climbing plant in my enclosure that has a "stick" in the middle of it. when I need to take out Aster the cantankerous Crested, I will coax him to the top of the plant. then I'll trick him to jump into my palm...

It looks like I'm juggling my crested but I've developed a technique that is unconfrontatinal as possible. After he is on me for a while, he will start to lick and smell me...He seems to calm down after a little while...

I guess whatever works for you is best...I like tails myself.

i do the same thing, i herd with one hand into my outstretched hand. Really i give him the option of the nice flat one or the cowering cupped one aimed at his face :P
I just dont like to grasp any of my geckos
