i don't know what my toad is doing????????

lilmom79 Nov 19, 2004 06:25 PM

my daughter caught a taod in the yard over the summer and we kept him. we bought him an aquarium, food, water dish and everything. my b/f loves this pet...lol he missed feeding him for 2 days though n now he is hiding under his dirt and not eating the food that is in there now. he is not dead cause my b/f lifted up the dirt patch we have n touched him n he hopped into his food dish, but then hopped away again n went back under the dirt without eatting. i am hoping this is just a hibernation thing, but i don't know much about toads. if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. u can email me also at lilmom79@ptd.net with any info too. thanx hope u can help.

I'd say it's quite normal, my spadefoots have gone the better part of a week without surfacing to feed. Your toad will not starve itself and will do what's in its best interest. Just let him do his thing and he'll be fine.

You're probably right. I'm sure you're toad is just hibernating.

In that case, you should drop the temperatures in his cage to the 60-65 deg range in the day and 55-60 at night. Give him food less often, maybe once every other week. If he starts to become active again, and appears to be searching for food, give him some. continue to feed him more often once you see when he starts to become overall more active (this should be nearer to spring), and raise his temp back up.
