Long Island Herps

nomadofthehills Nov 19, 2004 08:50 PM

Where do you find them? I have been told Wading River... where in Wading river lol? I get my license in June, so once I do I'm going herping (my parents won't take me ). I live in South Huntington, so I really have no experince... I have only seen a few garters/ribbons in west hills park...

Anyone know any Long island herp fourms? Or where I can find the lizards in greenlawn?

THanks!

It couldnt hurt.I personally dont belong to it,but that is strictly because of lack of time and My own things going on,but,I know that they organize trips out into the field.A lot of local excursions so it might help to get some local tips for the area that You are near...Good luck ,Chip....

the LIHS is a good org to join. i usually go to the meetings everymonth. I have found a lot of herps here on eastern long island. i don't collect and just photograph. there not as uncommon as people think, you just have to look. i have found n. black racers, e. milksnakes, smooth green snakes, worm snakes, n. ringnecks,e. hognoses,an d of course ribbons, garters, and water snakes. frogs/toads, e spadefoots, fowlers wood frogs, n spring peepers, n, grey tree frogs, green frogs, bullfrogs, pickeral and southern leopard frogs. i have seen a n cricket frog in over ten years(now most likely extinct to LI)salamanders, e tiger salamanders, spotted salamanders, red backs, marble slamanders, four toed salamander, red spotted newts, blue spotted/jefferson salamander complex. turtles, spotted, painted, snappers, etc. as far as lizards the ruin (italian wall lizard) lacerta is the only lizard species we have out here. anyway there are alot of herps here, but unfortunately like everywhere else habitat destruction and collecting have taken its toll. dave

what i meant to type is that you should join the lihs. its not too late to join. you dont even have to become a member to go to the meetings. they are open too the public. they do more stuff in the spring/summer. but during the winter we do have meetings, usually with a quest speaker. we meet at the copiage memorial library(see the www.lihs.org for the specific dates)people usually bring snakes, frozen mice, and other herps to the meetings to display or sell. and we also have a raffle with various herp products. it is a little late in the year out here now to go herping. i have seen a few hatchling garters during that one warm day we had. and a friend at work found a n. brownsnake(dekayi) in her yard raking last weekend. in mid feb/or end of feb, the eastern tiger salamanders will start to migrate to the vernal ponds. and of course then the wood frogs and spring peepers will folow and start emerging and calling. whats good about the winter is that its a great time to drive around(of course if its not snowing)and get a look at the area or possible herping places for the spring/summer. its easier to find where the ponds, lakes (or even junk piles)are so when the summer comes you can also check out those places. during the summer with all of the growth and vegetation these places are sometimes overlooked. i have found a lot of great spots during the fall, that i completely missed during the summer. and marked the places down on the map/and paper to locate and go herping during the summer. the italian wall lizards are found on and near the train tracks in babylon. thats one spot that i know of thats well known. dave
