Is a ball a good first snake?

abster82 Nov 19, 2004 10:14 PM

I am interested in getting my first snake in about 6 to 8 months and was wondering if a Ball is a good starter snake? I understand that they can be hard to feed and that isn't to appealing but I have been around them before and I really like that they are calm and docile. I have been told that boas are good starters but I really don’t like the idea of that big of a snake to start with. I also was wondering about the Morphs... Can there be a personality difference compared to the “normal” balls?

As far as morphs I do not know of any being more calm than others. Each snake is an individual. I have had some ball pythons that are 10 times as quick to bite as any amazon tree boa (if you are not familiar they have a reputation). There are boa constrictors that will be less mass than a ball python as well. I think ball pythons are simple though. 99% of them are super calm and mine are some of the best feeders in my collection. A ton of people I know who have a ton of snakes started with ball pythons. I recomend getting a female because you are likely to love it so much in the next 2 years you will want to breed them. I know this sounds optimistic and it is never a 100% you will have the perfect animal I am desribing. They are only mildly more maintenance than a corn snake but its not such a bad thing to have a slightly more demanding animal especially so low in the damand level as far as snakes go.

Thanks… I was looking at different morphs on the internet just to see color patterns and average price and some of them I can’t believe how they cost. I know that I would really like to see some in person for right now I really like the Mojave color { but I’ve only seen it online} and the normal. I do plan on getting a female for sure hadn’t thought about the breeding aspect though very good point for later on.
