Uroplatus and eating...how mysterious>>>

viper69 Nov 19, 2004 10:53 PM

Man, I tell you. I have two great Mossy Leaf Tails. They both look great. The female always eats in front of me..she's a little piggy, the male just watches her eat. OR watches the crickets while she eats.

I have seen him eat only once, and that's when he arrived. Although, that was about a month ago, maybe a bit more. I see him drink though. But man I never see him eat. He's always looking at the crickets though.

That goes for my juvi Henk..He/she ate the first day he arrived from the breeder. But after that I haven't seen him eat either. Seen him drink though. His colors are slowly coming in. All 3 have reasonably good sized calcium sacks. The Henk's are really noticeable too.

Does anyone have this "problem", not seeing their Uroplatus eat. I am just not used to it. So it always makes me nervous. All other herps I owned eat in front of me..even my last henk did.

Just wanted people's input into their own Leaf tails eating behavior.

Can't help ya there Chris, mine all seem to eat as I watch, if they spot food they POUNCE.

I'm sure there are eating, Maybe you dont watch long enough, as they do stare at the BUGS for a while sometimes, but stay motionless, with that excited look in there eyes as they lick there chops.

Maybe he is waiting for his girl to eat first, being a gentlemen,

yea, my phants tended to be very secretive about eating for a while. my only leaf tail that i would say i dont often see eat is my male henkeli, but hes just who i see eat the LEAST. i can always tell everyones feeding by the bumps, brushes, and THUDS i hear in the night. are you watching them feed with the lights on? that might affect them a lil....i noticed their aim gets thrown off when you turn lights on. i had a ball python that would strike at mice but miss by as much as 6 to 12 inches if the light was on. the way i got to see my first phantasticus eat was by letting him perch on my finger while i held him over a container with some dusted criX. so i wouldnt be worried about not seeing them eat, unless you start to notice that they arent eating at all. start off by trying to keep track of the circkets by counting the number you put in a deli tray, check back the next morning and ill be at least a few will be gone.

I just recently purchased my henk and ive never seen him eat. But the noises of him jumping around the cage keep me up all night so i'm pretty sure he is.
