Actually, it sounds like crotalus willardi, the ridgenose rattlesnake. They typically live at evavations of 5000 to 8000 feet in canyons with pines or oaks. They are a smaller rattler only getting 18 to 21 inches long. Though it is the state reptile of Arizona, it is also found in New Mexico. They eat mainly smasll lizards and centipedes and such. Hope this helps!

If this is the snake you saw consider yourself one of the very lucky, this is a very rare find.

If you really, really want to know what lurks in your "neighborhood" get a field guide to reptiles! There are several available, from the Audubon guide to the Peterson field guides, and there's probably a field guide specific to Arizona. Then you'll be absolutely sure, as soon as you find a new reptile. These books are small and can easily be carried with you. Every good herper has dog-eared copies. Go to Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, maybe even eBay for an even better buy. But BUY ONE!!! You won't be sorry!
