Well I got her to an emergency vet appt. today... (from the "gasping" post)

abstractcypher Nov 20, 2004 01:42 PM

The vet took some x-rays and he says she has an enlarged liver, w/ possible calcium deposits. He also said it may be calcification of the liver. In the x-ray, when put side by side to an x-ray of a beardie w/ a regular, healthy liver you could notice a BIG size difference in the lungs. The Doc said it looked to him that the liver is pushing up against the lungs, hence the breathing problem. I mean, the size difference of the lungs of Babs and the x-ray of the healthy dragon was alarming.

Not good news...

He said my best option is a biopsy, but unfortuantely, I can not afford the $400 price tag that comes w/ it. But he also added that he had to give me a "guarded prognosis" that it looks bad.

I told him about her recent bout w/ coccidia and he says that could/might be the problem, but he said it wasn't likely, though could be.

So, now she's back on the Coccidia medicine to see if thats it. As soon as she deficates i'm going bring it in, but this is where were @ for right now.

If anybody has anything they may be able to add from experience i'd really appreciate it.

It's just one of those days today. It's raining, i'm moving and my little girls not doing too well. And theres also the possibilty of her cagemates being exposed to whatever it is she may have. The rain seems fitting...

i'm sorry for the bad news...and for the weather. i was going through previous posts recently while doing research before buying a beardie and i saw the pictures you posted before and Babs is a great lookin gal.

i understand how it is to not be able to afford a lot of the medical costs when it comes to having a sick lizard. my experience was different (and it was my 1st lizard back then) and someone with more experience and knowledge adopted my sick leo to take care of it and has done well.

i hope someone with a similar experience as you can come across this message and help you out. best of luck to you~

Man, sorry to hear that it's that serious. Did he say what else could have caused it? I don't really see how it could be anything that would be catching though.... Did he mention it could be?

Hope things work out.

Two products that do help liver.
Even if you have to get it in human capsule form.

Silk Marian thistle is good for the liver.
Worked wonders on my husband (who drinks beer)
And I know people with liver compromised dogs
that use it. It is an herb. NOt sure how Lizards
would do on it.
It is a memeber of the artichoke family which is
also good for liver. artichokes are high in phospherous.

Dandelion is good blood purifier. And accually
dragons will eat them in their greens. If you can get this
add it daily to the greens. They are listed as one of the best
for staple greens. Who knows it could help. Unfortunately
Dandelion is a weed and hard to find in the grocery stores.

One other thing on Dandelions.
My yard was full of them when I raise netherland
dwarf rabbits. One time one of my does retained
half a fetus. I fed her on a strickly dandelion
diet. 30 days later she had a mummyfied fetus.
Never got an infection. I was amazed. And am a firm
believer in feeding dandelions. I have a few growing.
But do not have any seeds at this time or I would
mail you some.

Awesome! I'm going to definitely try using those. I'll keep everyone updated on her progress.
