Sick White's Tree frog

ak7fan Nov 20, 2004 03:05 PM

I need some help. I have 2 white's tree frogs, male and female. The male has recently stopped being active. He hangs in his dish all the time, his color is always brown now with some green splotches on his back and he has not eaten the last couple times I tried to feed them.

My female has been hogging the food so I tried to feed the male when the other was sleeping but he just watched the crickets go by him.

Should I try to force feed him? What could be wrong. They have fresh water decalcified and the crickets have vitamin suppliments.

The female seems healthy so I'm not sure what is wrong.

Funny you should mention this, last time I bred my frogs the male would do exactly this and let the female get all the food... Sadly the male did eventually die but I did get a big batch of tadpoles. Not sure if I would force feed just yet, how long has he been without food?

Yesterday, I quaranteened Spooks because his condition was very bad. The swelling on his back and puss under his skin was profound. I put some crickets in his container and I believe that he may have eaten 2 and leaving 4.

This morning Spooks must have gone to the bathroom because there was some fecal matter in the cage and also some bloody like substance. His swelling in his back has gone away, spooks still has spots on his back and it seems like his back is scabby. I'm not sure if he's producing mucus.

I cleaned his container, put a new damp towel and water dish in, added the 4 crickets and hope he continues to improve. Spooks was pretty active this morning and not hyperventilating like he was yesterday so I'm hoping that's a good sign. Chubs continues to be healthy in the terrarium.

The pet store guy said amphibians don't respond well to meds and expressed that there wasn't much I could do other than separating the frogs and cleaning their environment.

Wow I didnt realize that there were also symptoms, very different from what I encountered. I would keep up the quarentine, I have heard that a good souce of food for situations like this (and I have personailly used) is raw ground hamberger with Vit or Calcium added and rolled into a ball. You can either force this in him (may cause even more stress) or put it very loosely on a string and dangle it infrunt of him. Once he bites it gently pull the string from his mouth. I wouldnt recomend doing this all the time as hamberger is very fattening. Mucus you see on his back may be him secreateing his Toxin (they do contain a mild one) it is white in color(would mean he is very stressed), or he may just be shedding to get extra/bad bacteria off his skin. I dont think I need to repeat husbandry as you sound like your doin ok. And sadly the vet is correct, there is not much that anyone can do in a situation like this but hope. Good luck and keep us informed on what happens.
