this mourning i went to turn on my hognoses light and saw little red dots around there eyes, and black ones on there backs. after having the lights on for a while they were gone. i suppose they dont like light. i picked up a can of prevent a mite and claened and sprayed their cage. thats stuff is really oilly. i think it will work great. i have them soaking right now with hopes of killing the mites, then ill keep them in easy to clean plastic tanks until i have the mite problem finished. anyone else have any ideas how to resolve this problem? i have no idea where they came from.

Provent a mite works great, I have used it before on a cage of baby corn snakes who all had little black mites on them at the store i work at. all i did was follow the instructions and clean and spray the cage, and when it was dry I just put the snakes back in, without soaking them and removing the mites off their bodies. Within a few days all the mites were gone off of their bodies because of the cage being sprayed with it. Good luck!

they went off feeding probably from the stress i guess. they never were good eaters.

Provent a Mite is the best, and soaking will certainly help to releive some of the stress. Make sure you do the treatment in another 10-14 days to kill any hatchling mites, and this product doesn't kill the eggs! I actually use diluted Listerine as a cleaner and have sprayed it on some of my animals when they had mites and it seemed to get a number of the mites to jump ship. I put the biggest bottle of listerine they sell in a gallon jug and dilute with water till the jug is full.

Of course, if you do this wash off the snakes before you put them back and stay away from their eyes. There is also a supposedly natural product you might find in a pet store that can be sprayed on the animals, but i have never used it, so just a thought, and not a substitute for Provent a Mite.

As far as the hoggies being poor eaters, if your willing to give us some info, maybe you can get some assistance with them.

What species of hoggies?
How are they set up? Temps, cage size, substrate?
How old/big?
What are you feeding?
How long have you had them?
What technique are you using to feed them?
Wild caught/captive bred?

Good luck!
