Urgent Feeding problem!

prevetherper Nov 20, 2004 07:03 PM

I recently aquired a baby brazilian rainbow boa who was shipped to Illinois from California a day or so ago. I was just told that she was eating live fuzzies and that she ate about a week ago. Due to a previous misunderstanding, I was under the impression that she was eating frozen/thawed fuzzies. My problem is that I really need her to eat frozen/thawed fuzzies because in about a week I will not have access to live feeders! This is sort of an emergency! Does anyone have any good ideas on how I could get this boa to take frozen rodents? Any help would be extremely apprechiated! Thank you!

Prevetherper,
.....Nearly all baby BRBs will eventually switch over to eating fresh killed mice and then to frozen and thawed. Some of them are reluctant and take some time. I have 27 2004 babies here and 5 of them are still turning up their noses at dead prey but are readily eating live small adult mice and live pinky and fuzzy rats. If yours is not ready to switch it is not likely that you can get it to switch in a week. If you feed her now it is not likely that she will be hungry enough before next week to change to something different. Rather than trying to feed them fuzzies most of them prefer big hopper and small adult mice. I bet there is somewhere within 30 miles of you that sells live hopper and small adult mice.

It's really not that difficult to switch one over. I have switched most of mine much easier than I thought was possible. In fact last feeding I tried f/t for the fist time on 6 and 4 ate them without hesitation. Like Jeff mentioned...surely somewhere fairly close you can get live. If you go with the hoppers you can set them up in their own enclosure and feed and water them until you are ready to feed again.

You might also want to look down the page on this forum (a little over 1/2 way down) and read the thread entitled "switching brb from live to prekilled, advice needed ".
