The story of our RESs and their new home... questions

alieliza Nov 20, 2004 08:59 PM

Hey,
We recently adopted two red eared sliders. They are 12 years old. They had been housed together in a ten gallong tank for the length of their life. We had them in a bigger bucket/tupperware for a while, but just today we moved them to a 55 gallon tank.
They have about 8 inches of water, and a place to get themselves out of the water. They are swimming around, and obviously adjusting to the change.
I know that they are aquatic turtles, but I just want to be sure that they are not going to have trouble with that amount of water, since they have never in their 12 years been in that depth.

Thanks. Any info would be appreciated.

they'll be fine. if u read my post i adopted 2 RES that are 18 years old, the guy said the most water they have been in was 4 inches. i put them in my 125 gal. tank with a foot of water and 2 basking areas and they are doing great. they couldn't float at first and would crawl on the bottom, now their floating is better after only 2 days. good luck

Don't sorry about it, your turtles will be fine ^_^ They can easily adjust to deeper depths. If by any chance they do have a problem, you will be able to tell. They will spend most of their time near the surface and they won't attempt to even go near the bottom. If this is so, just lower the water level and increase it by about 1/2 inch each week for them to adjust.
